Song of the Shade – Oriental Magpie-Robin by S Jayaraj

The Oriental Magpie-Robin (Copsychus saularis) is a small songbird native to tropical Asia, commonly found in open woodlands, gardens, and urban areas. Recognizable by its bold black-and-white plumage, it feeds on insects on the ground and is famed for its melodic song. In this tranquil watercolour study, S Jayaraj captures the quiet poise of an Oriental Magpie-Robin resting amidst cool woodland light. Perched assuredly on a sturdy wooden stem, the bird's classic monochromatic palette becomes a study in depth and subtle tone rather than stark contrast. Through this sensitive composition, Jayaraj captures the calm, watchful spirit of a beloved songbird enjoying a quiet moment in the heart of the canopy.
