Sentinel of the Savanna – Great Indian Bustard by S Jayaraj

The Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) is one of the world's most endangered birds. Native to India's dry grasslands, this large ground bird faces extinction due to severe habitat loss, hunting, and collisions with power lines. In this evocative watercolour, S. Jayaraj captures the majestic poise of one of India's most critically endangered grassland icons. Standing tall amidst sweeping, dry-brush strokes of earthy ochres and muted greens, the bird emerges as a noble yet vulnerable guardian of its vanishing ecosystem. Through soft yet decisive brushwork, Jayaraj elevates this portrait into a poignant artistic commentary on presence, memory, and conservation, reminding us of the quiet majesty that hangs in the balance.
